Casey Capstick

Casey Capstick, an AmeriCorps*VISTA with the Winston-Salem Community Action Coalition, was recognized with the prestigious North Carolina Governor’s Medallion Award by the North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service for her work with ABC of NC. The award recognizes the top 20-25 volunteers in the state.

Held virtually due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Capstick was recognized on May 12, 2021, through an online ceremony.

Capstick was nominated for her capacity-building work with ABC of NC during her 2019-20 service year as a member of the Winston-Salem Community Action Coalition. Throughout her time as an AmeriCorps*VISTA with ABC of NC, Capstick spearheaded a complete overhaul of ABC of NC’s social media accounts where she created hundreds of posts for their respective social media accounts, keeping in mind ease of replication and sustainability for years to come.

In addition, Capstick assisted with grant planning, writing, and research. Through her grant assistance, ABC of NC was awarded $84,000 to support the technological needs of the organization’s Education Center.

During her service year, Capstick also worked to organize and implement one of ABC of NC’s largest annual fundraisers – the Gourmet Lunchbox Lunch – which produced $170,000 in gifts to benefit ABC of NC.

After winning the 2020 Forsyth County Governor’s Volunteer Service Award (GVSA), the GVSA selection committee chose Capstick to be submitted to the state level for the medallion award. Capstick was one of 100 nominees.

In its 15th year, the North Carolina Governor’s Medallion Award for Volunteer Service honors the spirit of volunteerism by recognizing individuals, groups, and businesses that make a significant contribution to their community through volunteer service. Recipients are nominated at the county level by a designated award coordinator – with only one nomination permitted per county – and assessed by a statewide panel to determine the honorees.
